Fox CEO Thinks HD Disc War is Over
Monday, January 14th, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Speaking on stage at this years Macworld keynote, Fox chairman and CEO, Jim Gianopulos, said that Blu-ray will be the winner in the HD disc format war.
The impact of hearing Mr. Gianopulos say it out loud had an immediate impact. "The next generation HD disc will be Blu-ray, it looks like," Mr. Gianopulos said to the keynote audience.
In a humorous and insightful short talk to introduce Foxs new relationship with Apple, Mr. Gianopulos said that there only two important things in his business, "Make great movies and deliver them to as many people as possible." So while on stage primarily to punctuate the new movie rental deal with Apple, reading between the lines, it seems that this particular Hollywood executive doesnt yet believe that Internet delivery is the only way to reach his customers.
However, Mr. Jobs does, and Apple will go its own way on that, showcased primarily by the paradigm shift away from optical media in the MacBook Air. Apple, with a lot at stake in terms of its relationsip with Hollywod these days, has plenty of motivation to stay out of that particular fray.
