Future iPods May Be Hiding in Code
Monday, July 17th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
The software code in current iPods reveals clues about Apple's plans for upcoming music players, including cell phone and instant messaging features. According to AppleInsider, one of its forum members went digging through the firmware in his iPod, and found references to applications called "t_feature_app_PHONE_APP," "t_feature_app_MESSENGER_APP," "clMessengerModel," and "clMessengerApplication."
The software search also revealed references to an iPod keyboard, a search application, a graphic equalizer, and two new games called Simon and Stacker. Future iPods may also have more customization features, including multiple interface themes, background images, interface fonts, and startup photos.
The information was gleaned from the iPod nano 2006-6-28 firmware update package. If you have a Mac, you can look inside to see what you can find:
- Make a copy of iPod Updater 2006-06-28. It's in Applications/Utilities/iPod Software Updater
- Control-click the copy of the updater.
- Choose Show Package Contents.
