Gartner Reports iPhone 3rd in Smartphone Market Share for Q1
Thursday, June 5th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Gartner said on Friday that Apples iPhone placed third in global smartphone market share in Q1, 2008. Worldwide, smartphone sales were up 29 percent.
The worldwide sales of smartphones reached 32.2 million units, about 11 percent of all mobile phones.
"Nokia continued to maintain its leadership due to the variety of its smartphone portfolio, which includes a number of both high-end and mid-tier models available at different price points," Gartner said.
RIM was second with 13.4 percent while Apples iPhone accounted for 5.3 percent of all smartphones sold.
Pacific Crests Andy Hargreaves has predicted that the worldwide market for all mobile phones will be 1.27 billion in 2008. If Apple wants to maintain its goal of capturing 1 percent, it will have to sell 12.7 million iPhones, not just the magic number of 10 million. Mr. Hargreaves believes Apple may fall short of that number, while Piper Jaffrays Gene Munster is predicting 12.9 million.
