Gefen Announces Two Home Theater HDTV Scalers

Gefen announced on Thursday two new home theater scalers, the Home Theater Scaler and the Home Theater Scaler Plus, that convert the output of several different kinds of video sources into an HDMI output, up to 1080p. Audio inputs are also channeled into the HDMI output.
According to the Gefen announcement, "This enables different video sources to be viewed in high definition on any digital display equipped to support HDMI (high bandwidth digital multimedia interface) connectors. Separate audio inputs and outputs ensure users have an impressive selection of auditory options to enhance the high definition viewing experience."
The Gefen Home Theater Scaler has the following inputs and outputs:
- Two HDMI inputs each with digital audio (optical TOSlink and coax S/PDIF)
- Two component video inputs each with analog (RCA stereo) audio
- One HDMI output with separate digital and analog audio out
- Two HDMI inputs with digital audio
- One component input with analog audio
- One composite or s-video input with analog audio
Scalers are used to convert video sources from one resolution to another, for example, 720p to 1080p, and the use depends on the native resolution of the HDTV. De-interlacers convert from an interlaced source to a progressive scan source, for example, 1080i to 1080p.
Gefen's announcement stated, "Video adaptive de-interlacers, high performance frame rate converters, and advanced color engine technologies ensure vivid and dynamic images are delivered with crystal clear clarity. Digital audio delays ensure perfectly synched audio and video.
The Home Theater Scaler and Home Theater Scaler Plus are both immediately available for pre-order from the Gefen Website. Each is priced at US$499.
