Gmail Gets IMAP, iPhone Support
Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Google has been quietly rolling out IMAP support for its Gmail email service so users can see the same messages in their email client and on portable devices including the iPhone. The company also detailed exactly how to configure an IMAP-enabled Gmail account on an iPhone in an easy to follow video.
While POP email support has been available for Gmail for some time, IMAP support is so new that not every Gmail account user will see the option in their online account settings. Heres how to check to see if IMAP is available:
- Log into your Google account.
- Click the My Account link.
- Click the Gmail Settings link.
- Click the Forwarding and POP link.
- If IMAP is available, an option to enable the service will be listed along with POP.
If IMAP isnt available for your account yet, it will be. Google is adding the feature to all Gmail accounts. Instructions for configuring several email client applications, including Apples Mail, are also available at the Google Web site.
