Google CEO Misses from Some Apple Board Meetings Due to iPhone/Android Conflict

Potential conflict between Apple’s iPhone plans and Google’s own plans for its Android cell phone platform has caused Google CEO Eric Schmidt to excuse himself from "one or two" Apple board meetings. Mr. Schmidt revealed this at an event in San Francisco sponsored by Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.

When asked if he would have to resign from the board because of the competition, Marketwatch reported that he said, "not so far." He also stressed that it hasn’t been a common event, saying, "I’ve only done this once or twice, so it’s not as common as it sounds."

Perhaps more interestingly, Mr. Schmidt revealed that the "vast majority" of Google searches conducted from a mobile phone are coming from iPhones. That’s not bad for a smartphone that’s sold some six million units, a relatively small market share in a market that has been around for several years, and it could well speak to Apple’s claim that the iPhone is the best way to access the Internet on a phone.

Be that as it may, Mr. Schmidt said that Google’s Android platform is likely to result in phones that are "quite different" from Apple’s iPhone, though he would not offer any additional information. With Android being an open platform designed around advertising-supported services -- Google’s specialty -- differences between Apple’s mostly closed system are to be expected.
