Google Planning for iPhone Apps on "Day One"

Google has been hard at work on iPhone-native applications, and plans to begin offering its software the day Apple’s App Store launches. The Internet search and application giant isn’t saying what it has in store, but iPhone and iPod touch owners won’t have to wait long to find out since Apple’s app distribution system is set to launch by the end of June.
Google’s vice president of engineering, Vic Gundotra, commented "We expect to have applications at Day One," according to Macworld UK.
Apple released it’s iPhone software developer kit (SDK) earlier this year so developers could begin working on iPhone and iPod touch-native applications ahead of the App Store launch. The App Store is Apple’s Internet-based software distribution system for iPhone and iPod touch native applications. So far, only Web-bases apps have been officially available for the handheld devices.
Google is already offering iPhone optimized versions of its Calendar, Gmail and Reader applications, and the Google Maps and YouTube applications that ship with every iPhone and iPod touch. Considering the company’s familiarity with developing for the iPhone, it will likely have some pleasant surprises in store for the App Store launch.
