Google Releases Android SDK for Mobile Devices

Google announced its open mobile device development platform Android last week, and on Monday followed through on the promise of a software developer kit, or SDK. Pre-release versions are available for Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows.
Android, and the accompanying Open Handset Alliance are focused on providing an open and free operating system and software development platform for mobile devices including smart phones. Google hopes the Android platform will help developers avoid the limitations imposed by proprietary cell phone systems and cell carrier requirements.
Google also launched the Android Developer Challenge to reward developers for creating "cool apps that surprise and delight mobile users." The company plans to give away US$10 million in awards.
While some consider Android to be a direct threat to Apple’s iPhone, it may be more of a concern for Windows Mobile-based devices because it could be seen as an alternative to Microsoft’s mobile platform.
The first devices based on the Android platform will likely start appearing in late 2008.
