Google Shows Prototype Ad-Suppoted Cell Phone
Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Google has reportedly taken its own plans for a new cell phone model forward by showing a prototype of their device to manufacturers. According to the Wall Street Journal, the search engine giant wants to expand its advertising business to the mobile market by offering phones feature the Google search engine, e-mail service, and a new Web browser. To further that goal, the company has recently been showing prototypes to manufacturers.
Citing unnamed sources "who have seen Googles prototype devices," the Journal said that these prototypes arent as revolutionary as Apples iPhone, but the article also noted that part of Googles vision is to have free devices or a free service that is instead supported by advertising. Those same sources also compared the prototype to Nokia phones, or perhaps a Treo or Blackberry device.
The Journal piece also includes extensive background coverage of previously revealed information about Googles plans in this market.
