Google Signs Music Video Deals With Sony, Warner
Sunday, October 8th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Google on Monday signed agreements with Sony BMG and Warner Music Group to distribute music videos through the video portion of its Web site. The videos will be free and will be sponsored by Google advertisers, with the revenue shared by Google and the music firms. Warner will also make its videos available for purchase at US$1.99 each.
In the coming months, Google will also work with the companies to distribute certain videos via Google's AdSense publisher network, enabling Web site owners to run ad-supported music videos and generate revenue in the process.
Google on Monday also purchased YouTube, which last September struck a similar deal with Warner Music and on Monday signed contracts with CBS, Sony BMG and Universal Music Group to not only distribute music videos but also provide short clips from Survivor, CSI, and other TV shows. Google said that YouTube will continue to operate independently.
