Google and iTunes Video Compared

The San Francisco Chronicle's Verne Kopytoff on Monday published a lengthy column that compares Google's recently introduced video service against the video capability added to iTunes last fall. While he ultimately preferred free TV to either of the services, Mr. Kopytoff gave the edge to Apple.
He found iTunes' video quality superior to Google's and liked the fact that he could get permanent access to the shows he purchased. Google only allows viewers to get 24-hour rentals for recent TV shows (older ones are available indefinitely), and they must have Internet access while watching them. In addition, Google users can't take their shows with them on portable devices, nor can they burn them to DVDs, two other things that iTunes allows.
However, Mr. Kopytoff dinged Apple for requiring iTunes customers to completely download shows before watching them -- Google starts broadcasting the show as soon as enough of it is available and downloads the rest of the file in the background.
