- Of the three men who taught me how to sing, the last was Mel Torme. Apparently, Mel Torme is a joke to anyone more than a decade older than me, a living parody of a Vegas crooner. But I stumbled on th

Google: iPhone Tops Mobile Searches
Wednesday, February 13th, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apples iPhone accounts for the majority of Googles mobile-based searches -- 50 times any other handset. If other handset manufacturers can learn to match Apples easy to use Web access, handset searches could outnumber traditional computer-based searches within the next few years, according to Financial Times.
The iPhones search statistics were so high that it made Google do a double-take. Googles head of mobile operations, Vic Gundotra commented "We thought it was a mistake and made our engineers check the logs again."
For end users the numbers mean that Apple has figured out how to make Web surfing on a handheld device enjoyable, which is something other manufacturers apparently havent been able to manage yet. For Google the numbers mean that there is real money in focusing Web-based advertising at handheld users.
As the iPhone becomes available to more users those search numbers are likely to go up, and if Apples competitors can get their mobile Internet experience on par with the iPhone, the numbers will climb even faster. Either way, the numbers still look good for Google.
