HDTV LCD Displays Zoom, Plasma Revenue Sinking

Sony and Samsung have joined forces to build large LCD displays this summer, according to ChannelWeb.

"It is expected to be ahead of the schedule and start production in summer. And some LCD TVs to be sold this Christmas will use eighth-generation panels," Katsumi Ihara, Sony’s executive deputy president, told reporters at a news conference on the firm’s electronics product show in Taipei.

The joint venture is called S-LCD Corp. and will help Samsung leverage Son’s brand. Sony will benefit from a more stable supply of panels.

In a related story, the unit sales of Plasmas are up slightly this year, but the sales generated has fallen year over year, according to a report at Digital Trends.

Sales figures from NPD show that Plasmas had their first year of declining sales revenue. While unit sales were up 30 percent, total sales in February 2007 fell to US$181M compared to $216M in February 2006. The average price of a Plasma display is now about US$1688.

Unlike LCD TVs, Plasma TVs have not been able to offset lower average prices by reaching high volumes in their larger screen sizes," said Ross Rubin, the NPD Group’s director of industry analysis, in a statement.

TMO Note: Plasma displays in the popular 42 inch size are generally 720p while the emerging 1080p Plasmas remain much more expensive.
