HD DVD Player Prices Plummet Over Holiday
Thursday, May 31st, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Toshiba has recently dropped the price on its model HD-A2 HD DVD players as well as offering a rebate. Various retailers have also lowered prices and offered bundles which has sent sales soaring, up to ten times the former rate at some stores, according to VideoBusiness.com.
Since Toshiba started offering a US$100 rebate on May 20th, setting the net price on the low end model to US$299, sales have grown between five and tenfold, according to Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products.
Amazon cut the price further, to an effective US$238, over the Memorial Day weekend, but now it is back to the previous $299. It is listed as out of stock.
Costco is selling the HD-D2, the same unit as the HD-A2, for $249 with a free HDMI cable. Value Electronics is selling the HD-A2 for $299 but with a free HDMI cable and seven free HD DVD movies.
iPO previously reported that the Blu-ray/HD DVD war may degenerate to price, and the recent moves by Toshiba and its retail partners have breathed new credibility into that analysis. However, Blu-ray wont be far behind, and Phillip Swann of TVPredictions.com believes that Blu-ray will ultimately win that war.
