HD World: Many Not Getting Real HD as Intended

At a panel discussion on Wednesday at the HD World conference in New York, members cited several reasons why consumers aren’t getting the best possible HD picture, according to TVPredictions on Wednesday.

"Good HD quality -- I believe that people have never really seen it," Brian Morris, an executive for set-top maker Scientific-Atlanta, told HD World attendees. "But what we’re seeing today is not good HD quality."

Charles Myers, VP at Discovery communications cited several reasons for sub-optimal HD picture quality, stating that in the process, the signal gets chopped up and compared it to a meat grinder.

1. Some networks transmit the HD picture at lower quality to save money.

2. Then the signal is compressed.

3. The panelists noted that, while rare, LCD and Plasma flat-panel sets often exhibit motion artifacts and noise on the screen.

4. The consumer may not have set up the HDTV properly. "If the native resolution for their set is 720p, and they set it for 1080i, the set will upconvert the picture and it won’t look as good," said aid Bryan McGuirk, president of media and enterprises services for SES Americom

Mr. Morris expressed optimism that the situation will improve over time. "The ecosystem is the real problem. It comes down all the way from the beginning to the end," he said.
