Indie Filmmakers Eye the Video iPod
Sunday, October 16th, 2005 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
"What does [the video iPod and video podcasting] have to do with me, indie filmmaker?" asks an editorial at the venerable movie publication Film Threat. "In one word: Everything." Noting MTV's purchase of iFilm, editor Chris Gore posits that Apple's latest product open up intriguing possibilities for short film distribution. "How far away could iTunes-sponsored film festival podcasts be? Imagine Sundance for download," he wrote.
"On top of that," Mr. Gore added, "it's become popular, as a filmmaker, to blog the creation and subsequent production processes of your film." He cited Peter Jackson's and Kevin Smith's video blogs for their latest films but noted that this is really a key change to "the landscape of guerilla marketing."
Mr. Gore continued: "Now the game changes, because instead of just press releases and web updates, you can show footage from your film. Instead of mailing lists, you can have podcast subscriptions. Got rejected from Sundance? Go to Park City with your iPod and show the film to folks waiting in line. Congrats, you've started the first iPod parasite film festival."
The editor noted that filmmakers Arin Crumley and Susan Buice have already taken advantage of the new possibilities, releasing their first video blog last Friday. Mr. Gore included links to the filmmakers' tutorial on creating video podcasts and told readers that "we at Film Threat decided to try this video podcast thing out ourselves." Stop by his editorial to see what they came up with.
