Intel Debunks iPhone Atom Rumors

Following a CNET report that Apple will be using the Intel Atom chipset in the next iPhone, Intel has stepped up to say that isn’t the case. The chip maker claimed that one of its executives had been misunderstood and was simply using Apple’s combination iPod and smart phone as an example of the type of device that could use Atom, according to Guardian Unimited.
Intel spokesman Mike Cato told ZDNet.de (Babelfish translation from German) "Intel knows nothing about future products of other manufacturers and can therefore about it also nothing say."
The misunderstanding helped fuel the idea that Apple also was planning on announcing an Atom-based tablet device at its World Wide Developer Conference in June. So far there have been no other indications that Apple has a tablet-style device ready to go, or that it will replace the ARM-based technology in the current iPhone when it releases new models.
Analysts have been expecting Apple to introduce a second generation iPhone in the coming weeks. The recent lack of iPhone inventory in the U.S. and U.K. has many expecting Apple CEO Steve Jobs to make an announcement during his WWDC keynote presentation.
