Japanese ‘iPod Tax’ May Be a Moot Point

The Japanese government has considered revising the country's copyright laws to allow for the charge of royalties on the sale of MP3 players, opinion on the matter is so divided that the so-called "iPod tax" likely won't happen.
The Associated Press in Tokyo on Thursday reported on the matter, noting: "Japan already levies an extra fee for copyrights on gadgets sold in stores such as mini disk recorders that consumers can use for home copying of music."
According to the article, the money collected from such fees is passed to intermediaries who pay it out to record companies, musicians and others. Payments are determined by a sample survey of how music sold that year.
Now the record industry in Japan, along with other like-minded lobbyists, want the same process applied to MP3 players, and a government committee was formed in January to discuss the issue. But that group is so divided that "it is highly unlikely to come up with an agreement by the December deadline," the AP reported.
Apple in Japan would not comment on the situation.
