LG Reveals Details of Blu-ray plus Netflix Player

LG, a South Korean company, has revealed additonal details on their Blu-ray player which can also connect to Netflix for streaming movies, according to The New York Times on Thursday. The price is expected to be in the $400-450 range and be available in the fall.
Unlike the Roku player, the LG box does not have a wireless capability; it must be connected via Ethernet in the home. LGs Allan Jason, VP for sales and marketing, believes that most early adopters will have an Ethernet connection available in their family room.

Mr. Jason pointed out that the player can only connect to Netflix for now. Other services could be added later with a software upgrade, and it costs very little to add Internet services. Meanwhile, the thinking there is that the Internet is just too disorganized, despite what consumers might want. Hence, the initial limitation to Netflix.
"Were not going to put a skin on the Internet," Mr. Jason said, suggesting that too much choice is confusing. However, the suggestion was also that the door is open to any other single company that wants to partner with them.
The addition of the LG box in the fall further expands the options Netflix subscribers will have. Previously, Netflix announced a partnership with Microsoft to allow Netflix subscribers to use their Xbox 360 to watch streaming movies. However, to date, the streaming format for all announced devices, including the Roku box, devices remain Standard Definition.
