MSB Technology Announces MSB iLink - Digital Audio for iPod
Monday, December 25th, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by John Martellaro
MSB Technology announced on Friday that they will be shipping an iPod dock, the MSB iLink, with digital output. This requires a small internal modification to bypass the iPod's 24-bit digital to analog converter (DAC). Only 30 GB or larger iPods are supported.
Other than the internal electrical change, the iPod remains unaltered, unblemished externally and still functions as before when placed in the Apple dock. The small modification, which requires 3-4 business days, allows the MSB iLink to accept the digital sound signal and output to either Toslink optical, coaxial or balanced AES/EBU connectors.
The primary advantage of this system arises when ripping CDs in lossless (AIFF) format. The MSB iLink output is an exact bit copy of the digital source and will appeal to audiophile purists who want an digital rather than analog output. Lossy formats such as MP3 are output digitally, but remain lossy compared to the source.
MSB Technology assumes the original Apple Warranty which is voided by the modification. Details are in the product FAQ. The MSB iLink is slated to appear and ship at CES in January 2007 and is priced at $US1995.00 which includes a voucher for the first internal modification. Additional iPod modifications are $199.00.
