Mac Users Much More Likely to Pay for Music than PCs Users
Wednesday, December 19th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Fifty percent of Mac users pay to download music compared to just 16 percent of PC users, according to market research by the NPD Group.
The NPD Groups Digital Music Monitor surveyed users on their habits during the third quarter of 2007. The results were reported by Digital Trends on Wednesday.
"Theres still a cultural divide between Apple consumers and the rest of the computing world, and thats especially apparent when it comes to the way they interact with music," said Russ Crupnick, an NPD Group VP and entertainment analyst. "Mac users are not only more active in digital music, they are also more likely to buy CDs, which helps debunk the myth that digital music consumers stop buying music in CD format."
Other findings included the fact that Mac users are more likely to listen to music and watch video on their iPods (34 percent) and on their computers (56 percent) than PC users -- 16 and 31 percent respectively.
NPD didnt speculate on the cause of the skew, but Geoff Duncan at Digital Trends pointed to several possible causes that have been discussed by industry observers. First, Macintosh customers have a closer relationship with Apple, which supplies their Mac, iPod and iTunes. Secondly, students, musicians, artists and creative professionals traditionally lean towards the Mac, and those are people who are more likely to buy, instead of steal, music online.
