Microsoft Drops Plans for Subscription Music Service

Microsoft, which already sells US$0.99 singles through its MSN Music service, on Tuesday broke off talks with the four major music labels to start a subscription service. Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music and EMI Group had been asking for $6 to $8 per user per month.

MarketWatch's David B. Wilkerson filed a report that cited a Wall Street Journal article on the subject. The Wall Street Journal spoke with unnamed sources who confirmed that Microsoft had ended the talks. They weren't sure if the discussions would resume, but in the meantime, Microsoft's plans for a subscription service are on hold indefinitely.
