Microsoft May Be Caving in Blu-ray/HD DVD Battle

Microsoft’s new Xbox 360 Elite still doesn’t include a built-in HD DVD player. Now, a Microsoft executive has left open the possibility of Blu-ray on Xbox, according to TVPredictions.
"The omission [of a built-in HD DVD player] might seem unimportant if Microsoft Europe’s senior regional director did not make some news this week as well," Phillip Swann reported.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.Biz, Microsoft’s Neil Thompson said, "I’m not sure the market has moved to High Definition (movies) yet. And if and when it does, then the way that we’ve constructed the offering we’ve made means we’ll be able to go whichever way we want."
Recent sales numbers show that Blu-ray movie titles are continuing to sell at twice the rate of HD DVD movies, thanks to the surge of PS3s in customer’s hands. "...many industry observers are concluding that Blu-ray could be reaching the stretch drive," Mr. Swann said.
In another interview with the BBC, Mr. Thompson reiterated, "The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice."
Mr. Swann wondered if that choice will soon include Blu-ray.
If this happens, it is certainly good news for Apple. A situation in which industry momentum moves PCs dominantly towards recordable HD DVD and Macs move towards recordable Blu-ray would once again leave Apple on the minority side of a format war.
