Microsoft Plans Series of Multimedia Devices
Monday, July 10th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
More details about Microsoft's rumored portable music player are surfacing, including a product code name, "Argo." The Seattle Times is reporting that Argo encompasses a series of Xbox-branded portable devices that can play music, movies, and video games, along with a PC-based software media player and an online media service.
Although it is obvious that Microsoft wants a big piece of the iPod pie, Argo sounds more like a Sony PSP rival. The feature set is strikingly similar, including the ability to play games, watch movies, and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.
A planned release in time for the holiday buying season, however, may be a difficult goal for Microsoft to meet. Project development is still under way, and the PSP and iPod already have solid positions in the market.
In addition to overcoming Apple's leading position in the portable music player market, Microsoft will have to deal with unhappy partners that are already selling MP3 players based on Microsoft technology. It will also have to address the fact that Argo's online music service will compete with Urge, the music service it co-developed with MTV.
Engadget has an image that is purported to be one of the possible Argo designs.
