Microsoft Shoots for 1M Zune Sales

Microsoft's Zune media player may not be getting the rave reviews the company was hoping for, but its sights are still set on shipping at least a million units before the end of 2006. That number came in a rare revelation during an interview with WindowsITPro.

The one million target may be a bit optimistic considering the current level of interest in the Zune, but it underscores Microsoft's determination to carve out a substantial piece of the portable media player market for itself. The MP3 player market is dominated by Apple's iPod products - something Microsoft would like for itself.

Apple's market dominance with the iPod comes from an all-in-one approach where the company sells the player devices, and provides a well integrated media download service. In this case, we're talking iPod+iTunes. Microsoft is hoping that by emulating Apple's business model it will garner some success and ultimately some market share.

Even though it won't likely help boost sales during the holiday season, Microsoft plans to offer enhancements to its media player lineup in the coming months. Some will come as software updates, but the company also plans to release additional player models.

Whether or not those changes make a difference will be determined by consumer's pocketbooks. So far, buyers seem more interested in the product design and features the iPod offers, which means Microsoft has some hard work ahead leading up to its million Zune goal.
