Motorola Goes to Microsoft for Music Phone
Monday, February 13th, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Motorola is teaming up with Microsoft instead of Apple for its next MP3 player cell phone. According to Financial Times, Microsoft is looking to bolster its position in the digital music download market, and is banking on the cell phone becoming the player of choice. Motorola phones using Microsoft's Windows Media format will be available later in 2006.
Motorola previously teamed with Apple to produce the iTunes-enabled ROKR cell phone that received a luke warm response. Critics claimed the 100 song limit, and the inability to purchase and download music using the phone, fell short of expectations.
Apple's iPod product line, in comparison, holds the majority of the digital music player market world wide. So far, Microsoft has not been able to compete with Apple in this arena. In an effort to help change that, Microsoft purchased the French mobile phone software development company, Motionbridge.
Motorola plans to continue selling iTunes-enabled phones in some markets, but it has not said for how long.
