MySpace Unveils MySpace Music Service

MySpace entered the online music market on Thursday with the launch of its MySpace Music service. MySpace members can use the service to listen to advertisement subsidized streaming music, and can also purchase copy protection-free MP3 tracks through Amazon.com from their MySpace page.
Users can also make their own playlists to share with friends.
MySpace Music is starting off with a music selection that’s much smaller than the over eight million tracks available at Apple’s iTunes Store. Unlike the iTunes Store, however, all MySpace Music song purchases will be DRM-free. Only certain tracks at the iTunes Store are available without copy protection.
So far, Apple has been able to maintain its iTunes Store dominance even as DRM-free options like Amazon.com MP3 appear and become more popular. If MySpace can leverage its large social networking user base to expose enough people to new music it could make a dent in the iTunes Store market, but for now that will likely be small.
