NYPD Offers to Etch ID Numbers on iPods

The New York City Police Department is etching ID numbers on iPods, cell phones, GameBoys and other handheld devices. According to The New York Daily News, the free service places an invisible painted number on the device, enabling an owner to be reunited with the gadget if it’s stolen and recovered.
The police have registered around 2,100 devices over the past three months. They’re also recording serial numbers, in case thieves figure out a way to remove the ID tags.
"Overall crime is down in the subways, but for iPods and cell phones, unfortunately it’s up," Sgt. William Buckley said.
