Neflix Announces Deal with ABC and CBS to Stream TV Shows

Netflix announced on Tuesday separate deals with CBS Television and Disney-ABC Television that will allow current season episodes of several popular TV shows to be streamed via Netflix.

Starting this week, viewers will be able to watch CSI: Miami, CSI:New York, and NCIS. Numb3rs will be available in October.

About 350 CBS episodes covered in the deal include prior seasons of the three CSI series and Numb3rs, the first two seasons of the popular Jericho series and, among others, episodes from TV classics such as Star Trek, MacGyver, and Family Ties. The catalog episodes will come online this fall.

The Disney/ABC offerings centers on Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, and Disney Channel’s newest original series, The Suite Life on Deck.

"We are thrilled to enter into these relationships with CBS and Disney Channel and build upon their innovative distribution strategies," said Robert Kyncl, vice president of content acquisition for Netflix. "We have a shared interest in granting fans expanded access to and strengthening the networks’ key shows."

Customers will be able to watch streaming content on their PCs or the Roku box connected to their TV if they have obtained one from Netflix. Support for the Microsoft Xbox 360 and LG BD300 Blu-ray disc player will be added in the fall.

Now that Netflix has developed several hardware vehicles and TV content delivery deals, Netflix is poising itself to become a very strong competitor for mind share in the digital living room. Currently, Netflix has about 12,000 movie titles available for streaming compared to only about 2,000 on the Apple TV. However, Apple has about 20,000 TV episodes available in its iTunes library.
