Network Affiliates Want in on Podcast Sales

Local network affiliates want to be able to sell podcast versions of television programs, and WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina is waiting on approval right now. According to MarketWatch, WRAL has already started testing Air to Web Broadcast Replication technology from Decisionmark Corp. to stream its local news broadcasts, but want to be able to sell network programming as well.
The network is a CBS-TV affiliate, and is looking to sell shows like Two and a Half Men online, but only within its own broadcast market. Jim Goodman, WRAL's president commented "You can buy CSI two days later and it also goes anywhere in the world. What we are saying to the network is that we can help you sell this product. Let us sell it for you in our markets."
If local affiliates get the approval to start reselling network programming, that could have an impact on the iTunes Music Store, and other Internet-based video download services.
CBS is not selling its shows through Apple's service yet, but the other networks are likely following this issue closely. If WRAL gets its approval, other affiliates, and not just from CBS, will likely want to get in on the action, too.
