Nine Inch Nails Releases 2nd Song for GarageBand

The band Nine Inch Nails has released a second song, "Only," from the With Teeth album as a free GarageBand file, extending the band's efforts to use the power of digital recordings to empower its fan-base to make new creations from the band's original music.

"Only" joins "The hand that feeds," released as a GarageBand file in April of 2005, as a freely accessible download that allows users to remix the song using the same digital tracks produced by the band.

In addition to the GarageBand format (also supported in Logic), "Only" is being offered in Ableton Live (Mac and Windows), Pro Tools (Mac and Windows), and Sony Acid (Windows only) formats. In his first go around with this experiment, "The hand that feeds" was a Mac-only GarageBand/Logic file.

"Well, the experiment of releasing the hand that feeds in GarageBand format was a resounding success," said the band's creative force, Trent Reznor, on the Nine Inch Nails Web site." For those of you unaware, I essentially gave away the master multitrack sessions for that song for you to remix / reinterpret / ruin. Last I checked, there were hundreds of remixes and info posted here alone.

"I've enjoyed and cringed at what you've done with my song. Thank you (I think)," he added.

He also said that he was considering a more formal venue for posting community remixes, something which few, if any, major artists have so far done.

You can find the files at the Nine Inch Nails Web site. Downloading Only requires registration, and there is an agreement governing what can and can not be done with the music that goes along with downloading it.
