Nokia Shores Up for iPhone Battle with Symbian Purchase

Nokia looks to be preparing for competition with Apple’s iPhone line up by purchasing the cell phone software developer Symbian. The mobile phone handset maker already held about 48 percent of Symbian, and will be paying approximately €264 million (about US$411.5 million) to snatch up the rest of the company.
Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo stated "This is a significant milestone in our software strategy."
The purchase is one more step in Nokia’s move to open the Symbian platform, which could help cell phone makers better compete with the iPhone and Google’s Android platform as well.
The popularity of Apple’s iPhone caught many cell phone makers off guard, and the July 11 launch of the iPhone 3G will likely chip away at more of the long-time handset maker’s market share. While Google’s Android cell phone platform will be open, setting Symbian free could help Nokia maintain a stronger hold on the overall market.
Even if Nokia isn’t able to turn Symbian into the must-have cell phone platform, it looks like the company is hoping to keep the iPhone and Android at bay in what could be a long cell phone platform battle.
