British mobile phone service O2 bulked up its workforce by 1,400 employees ahead of Fridays U.K. iPhone launch in an effort to keep up with anticipated customer demand. 700 of the new hires will work in customer service, and the remaining 700 will serve as additional staff in the companys retail stores, according to The Independent.
Of the 700 employees added to customer service, 200 will be dedicated to iPhone-specific support. O2 post-pay customer service boss, John McGuigan, commented "It is very important to get the customer-service experience right."
O2 is expecting to sell about 200,000 iPhones during the holiday season through its own stores and also through a deal with Carphone Warehouse. Apples combination iPod and smart phone will set U.K. customers back £269 and will require a service contract ranging between £35 and £55 a month.
