Opera Mini Not Coming to the iPhone

Opera has developed a version of its Opera Mini Web browser for Apple’s iPhone, but it won’t be coming to the App Store. The alternative browser is being blocked from distribution because it competes with Apple’s own Safari Web browser, according to the New York Times.
Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, Opera co-founder and chief executive, confirmed that an iPhone version of Opera Mini had been developed, but didn’t elaborate on features.
This isn’t the first time Apple has denied applications because of conflicts with its own iPhone and Mac software. The company has also blocked an application that would have let users download podcasts, and refused an email application, too.
Applications that don’t make the cut at the App Store aren’t necessarily blocked from making it onto the iPhone or iPod touch, however. The "jailbreaking" community is still going strong, and for users that are willing to install unauthorized hacks on their handheld there is a long list of programs available that aren’t on Apple’s App Store.
Opera has not said whether or not it will consider distributing its Web browser through unapproved channels, or if it will simply kill the iPhone version of Opera Mini.
