PC World Names iPod Second Greatest Gadget of Past 50 Years
Sunday, December 25th, 2005 at 2:00 PM - by Brad Cook
PC World magazine over the weekend posted its list of the top 50 greatest gadgets of the last 50 years. While the top spot went to the Sony Walkman, Apple's iPod nabbed second place.
Describing the popular MP3 player as a "prince regent" to the Walkman's "aging king," PC World editors noted that when it debuted in October 2001, "it was nothing special." The third iteration of the iPod, however, "proved the charm," with its 40GB hard drive, iTunes compatibility on Windows and Mac, and USB 2.0 support.
The magazine's editors pointed out that success came "despite [the iPod's] relatively high price and poor battery life." Despite those issues, the device continues to outsell its competitors by a wide margin, and the fifth generation of the MP3 player "threatens to do the same thing for a new breed of portable video players."
Apple's version of the PDA, its Newton MessagePad, landed at number 28 on PC World's list. While the Newton blazed a trail for Palm, RIM and other companies, at the time it was considered overpriced and clunky, with handwriting recognition that was spotty at best.
