Paramount Drops HD DVD, All Studios Now Blu-ray
Wednesday, February 20th, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Paramount Home Entertainment quietly dropped its support for Toshibas now dead HD DVD format in favor of Blu-ray on Thursday. The switch means that now all of the major studios have turned their back on HD DVD, clinching Blu-rays spot as the high definition successor to the DVD.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Parmount said "We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer. As we look to releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."
Toshiba officially dropped support for its HD DVD format ceding victory to Sonys Blu-ray on February 19. The news came after Warner Bros., Wal-Mart, Netflix, and several other major players announced that they would not carry HD DVD products.
HD DVD products will stop being delivered to stores by the end of March. Atsutoshi Nishida, Toshibas president, commented "We concluded that a swift decision would be best."
