Patent Licensing Deal Could Add 3G to iPhone
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
InterDigital announced last week a patent licensing deal with Apple Inc. that could bring 3G support to Apples iPhone. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but in an SEC filing, InterDigital said that Apple had signed a seven year, "worldwide, non-transferable, non-exclusive, fixed-fee royalty-bearing patent license agreement" with the company.
Heise Online reported Monday that the deal will allow Apple to add support for 3G networks to its iPhone, a move many see as a key to success in the competitive European cell phone market, which is dominated by 3G networks. The U.S. version of the iPhone currently works only on GSM networks with EDGE, and is contractually limited to AT&T.
"Under the seven-year license agreement," InterDigital wrote in its SEC filing, "effective June 29, 2007, InterDigital granted a license to Apple under InterDigitals patent portfolio covering the current iPhone and certain future mobile phones, if any."
Speculation on when and with what carriers Apple would launch the iPhone in Europe has been hot and heavy in recent weeks, as many expect Apple to do so before the holidays. The deal with InterDigital could well have been a key piece of Apples ability to do so.
