Payments with Mobile Phone Coming

The mobile phone industry is moving forward on a global standard for merchant payments to be made with a cell phone, according to Computerworld on Thursday.
Nav Bains, projects director at the GSM Association (GSMA) said that theres momentum. "Everyone wants to move ahead."
The technology is targeted at replacing plastic credit cards with a more secure technology. "The GSMA is pushing for the Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) to become the standardized component for storing sensitive data in NFC-equipped mobile phones," John Blau wrote.
However, this is just one of many options being explored. Others include encryption in software or using the secure digital (SD) card.
Nokia is supporting the UICC option. Twenty-five vendors, including Samsung and LG Electronics, have agreed to participate in testing which starts in October.
Soon the GSMA will issue a white paper with technical guidelines. "The paper will focus on specific technical issues, which we believe will be useful to the standards bodies," Mr. Bains said.
TMO notes that losing an NFC-enabled cell phone with login protection is probably no worse than losing a wallet. Perhaps this is one of those new features that well see on our iPhones in the future. Its nice to know the iPhone uses Mac OS X.
