Pioneer $300 Blu-ray Drive Coming to U.S.
Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
In the battle of Blu-ray vs. HD DVD, consumer prices for players play a big role. Now, a US$300 Blu-ray player from Pioneer is scheduled to land in the U.S. in June, according to Engadget.
Each side in the HD disc format war knows that player price may ultimately be the deciding factor when large numbers of players eventually swamp the PS3 sales. So far, Blu-ray has been at a disadvantage in that department.
Now, the Pioneer BDC-2202 Blu-ray player, which has been selling in China in a slightly different version, is coming to the U.S. in June at about US$300.00. This version will also read and write DVDs and CDs, but is not a Blu-ray burner.
It seems unlikely this player will play back Blu-ray titles on a Macs since Blu-ray discs require an HDCP/HDMI link to an HDTV. Even so, its a product that will help remove the perception that Blu-ray players are just too expensive. And Christmas is still a long ways away.
