Piper Jaffray: Apple Will Sell 4.47M iPhones This Quarter

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, after spending 25 hours at Apple retail stores throughout the country, has raised his estimate from 4.1 to 4.47 million iPhone sales for calendar Q3. In the same period last year, Apple only sold 1.12 million.

In a note to investors, obtained by iPO, Mr. Munster described his methodology and calculated that Apple is selling 95 iPhones per day through its retail stores. The analyst visited flagship stores in New York and Chicago in addition to regular stores.

Mr. Munster believes that the demand will taper off a bit for the rest of the quarter, but also believes that his estimate is still conservative.

At WWDC in June, Steve Jobs presented a chart that showed Apple had sold six million iPhones through May. If Mr. Munster’s estimate proves correct, Apple will easily achieve it’s goal of 10 million iPhones sold even before the holiday-laden calendar fourth quarter starts.

Mr. Muster broke down his Q3 estimates by source: 1.78 million at Apple retail stores, 0.9 million at 2,200 AT&T stores, and 1.79 million outside the U.S.

The analyst believes his estimate may be conservative because the August 22 international launch should provide an additional catalyst to sales. His note also estimated a total FY09 sales for Apple of US$42B.
