Plantronics Ships Pulsar 590 Bluetooth Headset
Sunday, January 8th, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Misha Sakellaropoulo
Plantronics last week displayed its new Pulsar 590 Bluetooth headset at the Consumer Electronics Show. First announced last July with a fall 2005 shipping date, the Pulsar 590 features up to 10 hours of listen time, up to 12 hours of talk time and approximately 130 hours of standby time. The company said that its Lithium Ion battery can be recharged in about two hours.
The Pulsar 590 supports Bluetooth 2.0 and works with any device using Bluetooth 1.2 or higher. An included universal adapter enables the headset to work with devices, such as the iPod, that don't include the wireless technology. The headset's exterior features buttons for volume, call control, muting the microphone or speakers and tracking forward or backward through audio, although that last function doesn't work with the iPod.
With multipoint technology included, the Pulsar 590 can easily switch between devices as needed; the headset automatically pauses music when a cell phone call arrives, for example. Users can operate it up to 33 feet away from their Bluetooth devices.
In addition to the universal adapter, the Pulsar 590 comes with a desktop charging stand, an AC charger, a USB charging cable, a travel case and an in-flight cable, which disables Bluetooth radio while on an airline flight. The Pulsar 590 is available now from the Plantronics store for US$249.95. A company representative told iPod Observer that it will be in retail stores next month.
