‘Podcasts Growing at Frantic Pace,’ Says MarketWatch

Dow Jones Web site MarketWatch on Friday posted an article describing the "break-necking speed" by which podcasting is growing, according to FeedBurner CEO Dick Costolo. The company linked to just over 500 podcasts last November; now that number is north of 6,000 and growing. The average number of subscribers to those shows was 15 last year, 33 this year, with the top 20 shows grabbing thousands of listeners and the upper tier boasting tens of thousands.

FeedBurner manages over 62,000 RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds for almost 45,000 publishers, when blogs, news and other sites are included. The company doesn't provide circulation numbers of podcasts to the public but may start doing so soon. FeedBurner even hosts "Behind the Scenes," a podcast about podcasting that pulls in 3,000-5,000 listeners per show.

MarketWatch writer Frank Barnako also notes that The Godcast Network is hosting a podcast that walks through the podcasting features that will be included in the upcoming release of iTunes 4.9. Mr. Barnako thinks the new version of iTunes will "spell big trouble" for developers who have released podcasting utilities, but Cameron Reilly of Podcast Network noted that iTunes only works with iPods. "And while iPod has the lion's share of the market today, it probably won't a year from now as the 1 billion mobile phone out there become MP3 players," Mr. Reilly said. "Someone needs to develop a podcatcher that can get podcasts onto any device."
