Police Warn of Increased Crime Risk Due to ‘iPod Oblivion’

Police have long warned iPod users that they should use different earphones when out in public because thieves look for the telltale white earbuds. Now they want to alert people to "iPod oblivion," during which users may be so wrapped up in their music that they dont pay attention to anything else. In such situations, crooks may not care so much about grabbing the MP3 player as stealing a wallet or purse or doing something else to take advantage of a distracted pedestrian.
KFMB News 8 in San Diego has a story about "iPod oblivion" on its Web site. The article noted that subway police in Boston are handing out fliers that warn travelers of the increased danger of becoming the target of a pickpocket or purse snatcher if theyre not paying attention. While the police in San Diego havent taken such a step yet, one detective said that no matter the city, "the bottom line is awareness."
