Potential iPhone Audience Very Large

Research by the Solutions Research Group showed that the iPhone will have a broader and larger audience than some have believed.

The Solutions Research Group data showed that of those definitely interested in purchasing an iPhone, 72 percent are male and 28 percent are female. While the average age of those interested is only 31, it was surprising to find how effectively Apple has been able to market the phone across all age groups.

As reported by PC World, the data showed that 31 percent of 15-24 year olds, 32 percent of 25-34 year olds, and 31 percent of 35-49 year olds are interested in purchasing the iPhone. However, those over 50 didn’t show much interest. Of note was the fact that about half of those surveyed who plan to buy an iPhone don’t have an iPod.

It turned out that many Blackberry and other smartphone users don’t want the extra functionality of those phones and may be attracted to an iPhone instead. While those smartphones are considered a "boring" work device, the iPhone has succeeded in creating a buzz with teenagers as well as businessmen.

Finally, the most likely buyers, the two biggest markets for the iPhone, will be New York and California, the research found.

Apple’s stated plan has been to capture one percent of the cell phone market. This data suggests that they may do far better than that.
