Public Radio Looking for Local Podcast Control
Thursday, February 23rd, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Local Public Radio and TV affiliates are concerned that their subscriber base may fizzle out if National Public Radio (NPR) maintains its centralized podcast repository. NPR manages a sort of super-list of podcasts that it and local public radio stations produce, giving listeners a single place to look for their favorite programming. According to MarketWatch, the local stations fear that this will draw listeners away from their Web sites, which they want to keep as public radio destination sites.
PaidContent.orgs Rafat Ali, who is covering this weeks Public Broadcasting New Media Conference, commented "Organizations like NPR and PBS are arguing that there should be a centralized aggregation effort, a bit like a destination site." He added that "[Affiliates] resist these moves and want to make their local sites as the destination sites."
In addition to the NPR Podcast Directory, listeners can also visit their local affiliates Web site and the iTunes Music Store to listen to Public Radio podcasts.
