QuickTime Update Forces Windows Users to Download iTunes Too?

A reader has alerted iPod Observer to the fact that downloading the latest version of QuickTime for Windows -- 7.0.4, released by Apple on Tuesday -- requires users to also install the newest edition of iTunes, which was also updated on Tuesday. That reader also reported browser crashes when trying to view movie trailers on Apple’s Web site with QuickTime 7.0.3, but we experienced no difficulties when loading Apple’s movie trailers in the Windows XP version of Internet Explorer with that version of QuickTime.
However, we were unable to update QuickTime from within the application, receiving an error message stating that either the computer was offline or the QuickTime server was. The computer in question was indeed connected to the Internet at the time, but we were unable to determine if the QuickTime server outage was a glitch or a deliberate move by Apple.
When we downloaded QuickTime 7.0.4 for Windows from Apple’s Web site, however, we were forced to download an iTunesSetup.exe file that also installed the latest version of iTunes. QuickTime continued to give us an error message when we tried to update it from within the application with version 7.0.4. In Mac OS X v10.3.9, selecting QuickTime update from within the video player launched Software Update without a hitch, showing QuickTime 7.0.4 and iTunes 6.0.2 as separate downloads.
