RealNetworks Doubles Subscribers

RealNetworks has doubled its subscriber base in the past year, bringing its numbers up to 1.4 million paying customers. According to Forbes, Real thinks that music listeners are warming up to the idea of music subscription services. Apple’s iTunes Music Store (iTMS), in contrast, lets users purchase and download music they get to keep.
Real’s senior vice president of consumer services, Dan Sheerhan, feels the biggest obstacle in adoption of music subscription services is that they aren’t directly compatible with the iPod, and that there aren’t any other MP3 players that can compete with Apple’s music player.
He hopes that will change this year once Samsung, Toshiba, and SanDisk start introducing new products that work better with the RealNetworks service.
Although the RealNetworks music subscription service has doubled its subscriber base, the iTunes purchased music model is still by far the dominant leader in the market. The iTMS is currently counting down to 1 billion songs sold.
