Report: iTunes Sales Up 84 Percent
Thursday, December 14th, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Additional information is surfacing that counters the Forrester Research report claiming iTunes Store sales are down. Now the Internet data tracking company comScore is reporting that instead of a drop-off, iTunes revenue is up 84 percent compared to last year.
comScore compared sales at the iTunes Store for the first three quarters in 2006 to the same period last year and found that buying transactions were up 67 percent, and that the dollars spent per transaction rose 10 percent.
The overall number of people using the iTunes Store is climbing too. In November 2005, The iTunes Store (then the iTunes Music Store) attracted 11,270,000 unique visitors. In November 2006, the unique visitor count was up 85 percent to 20,801,000.
comScore isn't alone in its perspective on iTunes sales. On Thursday, American Technology research analyst Shaw Wu issued a report where he estimated sales were up 95 percent year over year. The day before that, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated sales were up 78 percent when comparing january through September 2005 to the same period in 2006.
The numbers from the analysis firms may not be the same, but they do show a trend that is decidedly different from the 65 percent decline Forrester reported.
