Research Firm Sees ‘Big Bang’ Started By iTunes Video
Sunday, January 22nd, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Brad Cook
While online video delivery existed before the release of the video iPod, ABI Research on Monday said that the availability of video in the iTunes Music Store signaled a "big bang" that should lead to 89% annual growth of the overall market through 2010.
ABI's recent "Broadband Video and Internet TV" report showed that traditional distribution channels will dwarf online video delivery, but principal analyst Mike Wolf believes that the new medium will still see rapid growth "as large content providers offer their crown jewels for purchase over the Internet, and new platforms enable consumers to watch this video in whatever format they choose," ABI said in a statement.
"When companies such as Intel, with their new Viiv entertainment PC platform, and other large stakeholders such as Apple and Microsoft, focus their attention and resources, the combined impetus will force this market to expand, and consumers to open their wallets," Mr. Wolf noted in a press release.
