Rogers Strikes iPhone Deal in Canada

Rogers Wireless revealed on Tuesday that it will be Apple’s official iPhone partner in Canada. The Canadian cell carrier isn’t saying exactly when the iPhone will hit store shelves, but did confirm it would happen some time in 2008.

Rogers CEO, Ted Rogers, commented "We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned."

The company announced over a year ago that it expected to strike a deal with Apple, and hoped to begin offering the iPhone in Canada late in 2007. By September 2007, however, it was clear that the iPhone wouldn’t make it into Canadian hands until later than originally planned.

While Canada’s iPhone launch was likely delayed in part due to Rogers’ contract negotiations with Apple, it may well have been hampered by a trademark dispute over the iPhone name, too. In October, 2007, Comwave claimed that it owned the iPhone trademark in Canada and was already using the name in association with its VoIP products.

Despite the lack of an official launch date, it looks like Canadians will finally be able to buy an iPhone without having to hack the combination iPod and smart phone.
